The motto “Hard work pays off” is what we live by at Evolution Grappling Academy. At our Kids Martial Arts classes in Beacon, it’s our goal to build up our young students, providing them with the outlet to develop social skills by engaging them with their peers and equip them with the tools necessary to be great athletes, great competitors, and great leaders. President Theodore Roosevelt, a Jiu Jitsu practitioner himself once said “The art of Jiu Jitsu is worth more in every way than all of our athletics combined.” The beauty of Jiu Jitsu lay not only in the effective techniques, but also in the personal development of it’s practitioners. The founder of Judo, Jigoro Kano preached two main philosophies that apply to the art of Jiu Jitsu as well, “Maximum Efficiency with Minimal Effort” and “Mutual Welfare and Benefit”. While the first philosophy is self-explanatory, the latter philosophy has to do with the the fact that you can not grapple by yourself. You NEED partners who are willing and able to help you grow, as well as you being a willing and helpful partner in assisting the growth of others. Mutual Welfare in this sense being the relationship between practitioners, and the relationship between the teacher and his students. The benefits are the results of the dedicated, disciplined hard work and the sum of it’s efforts.
When I was in High-School, I was asked what I wanted to do for a career after I graduated. I always said I wanted to be a teacher. I planned on going to a university and getting a degree in education. As fate would have it, I wouldn’t goto a University, nor would I receive a degree in education, but I would wind up teaching. And I would wind up teaching an art that I am incredibly passionate about and dedicated to. An art that has changed my life and many others.
Last month(October) I began our “Student of the Month” recognition. A student qualifies for this special recognition when they display outstanding qualities of Leadership. Positive Attitude, Confidence, Enthusiasm, Compassion, Hard Work Ethic, Communication, and Respect for themselves as well as those around them on and off the mats.
Student of the Month Spotlight: Alexandra C. : A leader by example
When Alexandra began her Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes in Fishkill, a year and a half ago she was timid and shy. One of the first students of Evolution Grappling Academy’s Kid’s program, Alexandra is a dedicated, study of the art. Always bringing a positive attitude and hard work ethic onto the mats, the 11 year old Alexandra shows up to every class with such focus and intent on learning, it’s inspiring. Aside from her dedication and discipline while at class, “Zange” as her parents call her often pulls “overtime shifts”. Drilling techniques taught at class on the mats at her house with her tough little sister Gabriella. To be a champion in anything, the competitor must put in extra hours of practice and repetition.
Her parents have noticed improvements in her as well.
“Since she started BJJ, Alexandra has developed Self-Confidence. She takes on leadership roles in and out of school. She has increased her skills in athletic performance as well ad learned an effective form of Self-Defense. She’s more outgoing and less shy; especially in meeting new friends and has learned good sportsmanship. She truly loves Jiu Jitsu, and going to class. She is constantly learning.” said her proud mother Andrea.
On November 1st, Alexandra competed in the “North American Championship” held in Edison, NJ. Hosted by the North American Grappling Association(NAGA), a youth event with hundreds of tomorrows top competitors, from all over the east coast vying for the Gold Medal. All the dedication, all the discipline and all the extra effort earned the first-time competitor, the Gold Medal in her Intermediate division, as well as the highly sought after Samurai Sword only presented to those who earn the gold medal in their respective division.
All of us over at Evolution Grappling Academy would like to wish a huge Congratulations to Alexandra for her achievements and work ethic!
